Last week I told you guys about the latest version of Google Maps, bringing the ability to create favorites and even import your old ones from Nokia Maps. This newest version is also much smoother and I'm finding a GPS lock even faster. There was a bug however that prevented you from using the center selector key on certain screens. This has now been fixed.

Train & Bus Routing Should Be Coming Soon

Another great find I made is the upcoming feature that will give you bus & train directions instead of normal driving locations. It gives you routes, times, and rates. This is going to be a great feature that I can't wait for, especially with the rising gas prices. Taking the bus somewhere will be that much easier if I can just punch the locations into my phone and get instant results. If this works how it should I'd feel more confident taking the bus places without having to figure out the route and times before I leave the house. I can change up my routes on the fly now since I'll have my phone with me at all times.

Right now this feature is only available for Blackberry and Java based phones. I'm sure Google has this feature coming soon for S60 devices, but no official word has been made. I really can't wait for this feature to be added to my Nokia N82.

Once in awhile an application comes along thats just so simple but extremely useful. This is exactly what CalSyncS60 is. Now my Google Calendar and Nokia N82's calendar are in sync with eachother, so far without any hiccups.

CalsyncS60 has been around for about 4 months now I believe, but the developer has recently updated the application to fix some bugs and add a few languages. Not to mention you can now have a scheduled sync which happens automatically. I haven't yet tried out the scheduled sync and I can't find out much info on when it synchronizes, I'm guessing once a day. The sync between Google Calendar and S60's built in Calendar application is bi-directional meaning that if you add an entry on your phone it will be added to Google and vice versa. This goes for deletion of entries as well.

Below are a few recent changes made to Calsync.

0.3.1 - 26th of May, 2008- Some people had problems with long event IDs. This is now fixed.
- Added localizations for Polish and Dutch.

0.3.0 - 16th of May, 2008
- Scheduled sync, CalSyncS60 will automatically keep your calendar updated.
- Access point can be selected from the settings
- Some minor bug fixes, although some of the bugs from 0.2.0 are not yet fixed.
- Localizations for English, Russian, Slovak, Finnish, Romanian, German, French, Hebrew, Chinese Traditional (Taiwan), Czech. Languages are not yet tested.

So far everything is working great for me with the latest update. It's amazing how much this application has helped me out since I only use Google Calendar and not Outlook. Keep in mind this application is still in beta so you probably will find minor bugs. The great thing is there is a support forum where you can report bugs and ask questions. From the looks of it there have been many answers.

Like I said this application is free but since it's so useful I'll be making a small donation to the developer so he can keep giving us updates. Oh and did I mention this doesn't need to be signed. Just download and install.

It's been an ongoing battle between Google Maps & Nokia Maps. Some can't use Google Maps because it's all data. Those that have unlimited data plans like myself absolutely love Google Maps.



Google Maps for Symbian S60 has just updated to version 2.01 and adds the ability to create favorites which show up as a star on the map. Within these favorites you can add a buttload of imformation such as address, phone number, website, gps coordinates, etc. This is great for marking locations that you don't visit often and are hard to find. Or maybe if you enjoy hiking or walking and want to mark a tree or stream you find for future reference. You can also add your favorites to specific categories. The possibilities are endless.



Google Maps also automatically imports the favorites that you have stored in Nokia Maps, aka "My Places". This is a great move by Google to keep competition with Nokia Maps.

The application runs slightly faster than previous versions and is definetly a worthy upgrade. It seems to have a bug that maybe only is on the Nokia N82. When searching or on a screen besides the Maps screen I can't select anything. My center button isn't responding. Hopefully it's a bug only on my phone, but maybe others can confirm.

Nokia released their newest version of their popular Nokia Maps application today, bringing it to version 2.0. The application has been in beta for a while now working out all the kinks and getting feedback from users at Nokia Beta Labs. Hopefully it's not a premature release and the community is indeed happy with this version.

Nokia says,

Downloaded over 240,000 times since announced in February, Nokia Maps 2.0 has improved its optional Car Navigation, enhanced its pedestrian navigation, added multimedia city guides, now offers satellite images, and is sporting a redesigned user interface. Nokia's mapping and navigation solutions give people navigation features, local content and world maps directly on their mobile device, in a way that only connected devices can.

A partial list of the updated features in Nokia Maps 2.0 includes:

DRIVE:
- Improved optional Car Navigation equals PND-level car navigation experience with faster routing.
- Easy-to-use, updated User Interface features including a new navigation carousel with pre-defined navigation views - i.e. navigation, arrow, bird-eye.
- Top-of-the-line navigation features: signposts, multi-stop route planner

WALK:

Nokia Maps 2.0 uses vector maps provided by Navteq and TeleAtlas, Nokia Maps now has maps covering over 200 countries, with over 70 of them navigable. Maps can be downloaded over the air directly to selected devices or by using the Nokia Map Loader on a PC. A new beta version of the Nokia Map Loader is available on the Nokia Beta labs web site.

I personally have always been a huge fan of Google Maps and never use Nokia Maps, but today I'm going to give Nokia Maps 2.0 a try and post my thoughts on the new application. Nokia Maps is great for those who don't have an unlimited data plan, especially if you use the Maps Loader. Which do you prefer?

It's been a busy morning for Nokia Beta Labs. They've brought a few updates to some of the applications they've already had, and introduced us to the new Nokia Communication Center which I have quickly fell in love with.

Nokia Communication Center
First off I'll start with Nokia Communication Center. If you've already tried out the Nokia Beta Labs program called PC Phone than you might find this redundant. Even I first questioned why they would do this. Well I've never really liked PC Phone I couldn't get it to work properly and the need for a web browser was kind of a downfall. What Nokia Communicator will eventually be is a add on to Nokia PC Suite. Managing contacts and messages has never been easier. Sure I showed you guys a few weeks ago how PC Suite currently allows you to view and reply to text messages, but that was miniature compared to this new program. What I like about Communication Center is it has all your texts and MMS messages folders including the outbox and sent messages. You can reply to, forward and send new messages all from this program.You also have a place to manage your contacts which comes in handy.

Key features:

• Create and send messages easily
• Receive, view, forward, and reply to messages as they arrive
• Compose multimedia messages effortlessly with easy access to the images on both PC and device
• Manage messages, and sort and group them to quickly find what you are looking for
• Display all your messages in a timeline
• Manage all the contacts stored on your device
• Add new contacts with ease
• Create contact cards complete with thumbnail images

Right now the program is a separate install from PC Suite. It's not yet integrated. I actually think this is a great solution for managing my phone at work. I don't think it's necessary to install the full PC Suite at work, but Nokia Communicator is all I need. It's only a 7mb installation so it won't take up very much memory. Now at work I hardly even need to touch my phone, since most people know to text me rather than call me during work hours. If you have a bluetooth adapter or blue tooth built into your computer it just makes life that much easier. Keep in mind this program is in testing mode right now and you might find a few quarks. If you do head over to Nokia Beta Labs and let them know your issue so they can fix it in the next version. This is the whole point of Beta Labs. Click here to try out Nokia Communication Center. Update: Looks like you need to have PC Suite installed as well, the latest version in fact. So my idea about having only this program installed on my work computer is useless unless I want to install the full pc suite.

Location Tagger
Location Tagger Beta has been updated for the last time. Reason being is it will be integrated into most new Nseries phones that have yet to be released. The Nokia N82 has location tagging built in since the latest firmware update, but other than that all other Nokia smartphones need this separate application. If you haven't tried it yet, Location Tagger allows you to automatically add the GPS location of each photo you take to the file so that you can add it to a map on Flickr or Google. Here is an example of me using Location Tagger for my day at Disneyland.

New in this release:

• Persistent log. Now when you exit the application, your list of images in your logs tab will not disappear. When you delete an image from the Gallery of File Manager, the item will also be removed from the logs tag.
• File renaming. There is additional option in the Settings menu to rename tagged file. The file name will be added _NLT as suffix. For example, if the original file name is image001.jpg, it will be renamed to image001_NLT.jpg. This feature will allow you to easily differentiate between tagged and non-tagged files.
• Get location from cache. As you may know from our last posting that Location Tagger tags pictures with the last known position in the last 1 hour. If there is no last known position, it will put pictures in the queue until time-out. We added a new feature that allows you to get location from GPS device’s cache.
• Optimization and some bug fixes. This new version should run relatively faster than the previous one.

A Few More Updates From Beta Labs
Nokia Channels has been rebranded and reloaded. It is now called Nokia Headlines. I've never been too interested in this application but hey you can click here to check it out. Why not its free.

Nokia Text Messenger, a lighter version of the new Communication Center has been updated. It's only for Vista though, so if you have Vista it might be worth a try.

Lately there has been some buzz about streaming live video applications for S60 powered phones. In my mind the most popular one so far has been Qik, which I've used quite a number of times and have already mentioned in a few articles. Live video streaming is a great way to share your times with friends and family over the internet for other friends and family to see, and I think it's going to slowly become more popular as these technologies become more accessible.

The other day I got to meet a few people from the mobile industry at a Wom World get together in Los Angeles. Wom World is the company that helps promote Nokia Nseries & Eseries products. One of the guys I met was Jeb who runs Brilliant Expos, a company specializing in setting up Mobile events and expos. Awesome dude I wish we had more time to talk. He brought to my attention the Flixwagon application and spoke about how much he enjoys using it to stream live video from his Eseries phone. I had heard about Flixwagon a few times before but never got the chance to try it. If you remember Ricky from Symbian Guru just recently got married and this remarkable event was captured live by four Nokia N82's and Flixwagon. According to Ricky's recap the live streaming was a great success and over 9,000 people watched his wedding live throughout the day over the internet. Congrats again to Ricky and his new bride. This event is exactly what Nokia means by there catch phrase "storytelling rediscovered" which they tagged for the Nokia N82.

Now back to Flixwagon. Right now it's in alpha which means it's still under testing and you have to sign up and be put on a list to try out the service and application. If you check out their website you will be welcomed with a very professional and clean layout where you can start viewing recent live video streams. You will notice that there is already a huge community of Flixwagon users and is growing every day. Once you have your own Flixwagon account you can share, edit, and manage all your videos along with your profile. Adding your Flix's to Youtube or any website where you can embed code such as your myspace, blog, etc is simple with the code that Flixwagon gives you. If you haven't noticed I recently started sharing my videos here at Symbian Addict in the column to the right. You can view my recent videos and any live video that I may be shooting. You can also set privacy preferences to decide who has access to your live and stored videos. Viewers can add comments while you are streaming live so you can see them on your phone and respond back in real time.

The video quality so far has been pretty good for me especially since I'm currently using the Nokia N95-4 which has North American 3g bands. I haven't yet tried out video quality over an Edge connection but Jeb assured me that the quality is reliable and sufficient. So far the Flixwagon S60 application has been a breeze to use and easy to set up. The application seems light and doesn't slow down the phone or lock it up. As soon as you launch the application an internet connection is opened so that you can quickly record the moment and begin the broadcast when your ready. You set up the privacy preferences before you start recording or just do a one click video and start recording a public video stream immediately.

I have attached a few screenshots below so you can see what the application looks like.

As you can see the interface is very simple and straightforward. It can't get any easier.

Below is an example of the video quality that is uploaded. I was with my girlfriend in one of those drive through automated carwashes while her car was getting a bath.



The video quality is crisp and sufficient for internet video streaming. You might have noticed a little bit of clipping because of my deteriorating 3g signal in the concrete enclosed carwash, but overall the quality is acceptable.

Overall I find this application extremely useful and a great addition to my Nokia multimedia computer. It opens up a new window for sharing stories and memories in my life. When I show others around me features like this on my Nseries phone they are amazed by the technology that Nokia brings.

I originally posted this article over at The N82 Blog, but this huge news is worthy to be posted here as well since it's such a popular application.

Over the past week or so fans of the popular Youtube applications Emtube and Mobitubia have experienced connection errors. I use Mobitubia and just started noticing this a few days ago, about a day after a commenter here brought it to my attention.

Apparently Youtube has changed up some of their server settings making these applications useless. The developer of Emtube has yet to update his application with the new settings, but fans of Mobitubia should be happy to hear an update is here.

The new version of Mobitubia will be v1.80 build 2 and according to the developer it will be the final public release. Lets hope that Youtube does change their server settings again.

I have mentioned numerous times that Mobitubia is my favorite application for Youtube, mainly because it works a lot better over an Edge connection for us users here in the States with a Nokia N82 or older Nseries phone. Click here to see my review of the Mobitubia freeware application if you haven't tried it out yet.

Imagine your sitting on the bus, train, or at the DMV and your bored out of your mind. You want to bust out your iTouch or Playstation Portable cuz your Nseries or Eseries just isn't enough for you. But your limited to what you can do because theres no Wifi connection available. Connecting to the internet and browsing the Web is impossible without a hotspot.

Not with JoikuSpot. This amazing and free application for your Nokia S60 phone allows you to share your internet connection and transform it into a Wifi hotspot. So once you have this application running on your phone, another device can find it and see it as a WLAN connection and use it. This great idea just furthers my anger for the lack of 3g support here in the United States. We still have to rely on an Edge connection.

Here is a video of JoikuSpot being used with the iPhone. The internet looks really slow in this video and I can assure it's not that slow. Something must've been wrong with the connection, but either way he got it to work...

How it works...
JoikuSpot software is installed directly to the phone. When switched on, laptops and iPods can establish instant and fast wireless internet connection via smartphone's JoikuSpot access point using phone's own 3G internet connection. Multiple devices can connect to JoikuSpot in parallel and seamlessly share the same 3G internet connection. JoikuSpot acts thus as an internet gateway to external WLAN devices.

New in this release...
-Encryption support with WEP including automatic 128bit key generator
-Battery threshold shutting down the client when battery level is too low (adjustable)
-Default Access point can be set-Support for secure SSH tunnels with Putty
-90 days free trial. JoikuSpot Light will stay FREE also in the future. We shall later on introduce new Premium version with small payment. Naturally Premium will include even more advanced features.

As you can see from the screenshot above of my home laptop I managed to connect to JoikuSpot with my N82. Once I fired up the program my laptop found the connection pretty fast. Everything connected fine, but once I started using the connection on my laptop it would drop after about 4 minutes. Really odd, but I know this application is still in beta so these types of things are expected. The internet speeds were just what you'd expect from an Edge connection. Not slow but not fast.

Make sure you have an unlimited data package with your carrier because this application uses a ton of data.

On older S60 handsets a theme icon was placed in the menu folder so that you can easily access your themes and change them up. Right now on your N82 or N95 to change a theme you have to go to Settings > General > Personalisation > Themes.

Thanks to a developer name Sittiphol, the same guy who created one of my favorite applications called Mobitubia, designed the same Theme Launcher that is found on older phones. Now you can have an icon anywhere you want in your menu linked directly to your Themes. I keep mine in the root folder, but you can push options in your menu and put it in just about any folder you want. I have mine sitting in the Tools folder which is perfect.

I got an email today that Smart Settings For S60 application is now available to the public for 11 Euros. Not a bad price for an application with so much functionality.

I think this is some of the best news I've heard in awhile for the Nseries lineup. Dolby Digital has teamed up with Nokia to bring Dolby digital sound to music and videos on high end smartphones. This partnership just solidifies Nokia's Nseries lineup as some of the most advanced phones available.

This news comes to us from Will at IntoMobile.com, he says...

"Dolby's strength lies in their ability to take plain, old stereo sound and give it a 3D feel and increased depth - and now they're bringing their know-how to Nokia's Symbian platform. The Symbian booth at CTIA Las Vegas 2008 was small, really small. They didn't have much to show off, other than the Dolby Digital surround sound app. The booth rep said that Nokia is already gearing up to newer Nokia N95 8GB handsets with the Dolby Digital software already pre-installed.

The application installs and runs in the background when viewing movies or listening to music. When paired with a decent set of headphones, the Dolby signal processing is really amazing. Look for new Nokia N-series handsets to start offering Dolby enhancements in the near-term (according to the rep)."

This is a brand spanking new free instant messaging application called Octro for your Nokia smartphone. It's late here where I live so I don't have much time to test it out or show you screenshots yet. I installed it and managed to login to my Google Talk and AIM screen names just fine and chatted with a few friends. I'll get a chance to test it out more tomorrow and see its effects on the battery life and all that. Usually I use Slick instant messenger, you can read my review here. Keep in mind Octro uses data instead of texts, so make sure you have an unlimited data package.

This has to be one of the coolest accelerator applications I've seen come out. Believe me we've seen a handful of useless accelerometer applications. Don't get me wrong, there are some good ones, but I think I'd be using this one the most. Basically with ShakeLock you just shake your phone to lock and unlock your Nokia N82 or N95. It's that simple, which makes it so beautiful. It's not gonna work unless you give it a good shake, so don't worry about it unlocking in your pocket. Keep in mind this is only the first version, so it will only get better with time.

Best thing is this application is freeware, but donations are encouraged. If you donate you get the latest updates to the application, so I think it's worth it to give a few bucks. This application is already signed, however, before installing you have to set your phone's date back one year, install ShakeLock, then you can switch the date back. Has something to do with the certificate being expired, good thing you can get around it.

Today I got the honor of testing out a new application coming to S60 handsets called Smart Settings by MobiFun Software. This application was actually a big hit for s40 users, but is just barely making it's way to S60. This application is still in beta and should be released in March.

What does Smart Settings for S60 do? Basically it provides three major functions.

1. Auto Lock options. You can tell the phone to auto lock only in certain profiles. Set the auto lock period, set the phone to lock on any screen or just the standby screen, and set the auto lock exceptions for certain applications.

For example, I have a profile called Car. I keep my phone on a mount that sites in the middle console, facing me. Volume is all the way up, and the lock is set to off. This way I can easily access the functions of my phone like calling, maps, or reading a text (when I'm sitting at a read light of course). I also usually set my auto lock application exceptions only for the Music Player. Handy for when the phone is sitting at my desk when I'm at work and jamming the tunes. No need to fiddle with a lock when it's just chilling there on the desk.

2. Easy Unlock. Here you can change your lock combo buttons. Instead of the standard lock combos, you can change it to whatever is more comfortable for you. You can change the locks and unlocks to separate combos which is pretty cool.

3. Start Menu. You can make your left or right softkeys into a start menu, sorta like the start menu in windows. Push the softkey you choose for this application, and a small window pops up with up to ten shortcuts that you select to any applications installed on the phone. Each application is numbered, so if you have "settings" as your fourth shortcut, then you just have to push five on your keypad instead of scrolling all the way down to it. This I guess would be handy only for candybars since you don't have a slider to worry about. You can easily change the order of your applications as well.

I'm happy to report that I haven't found any bugs while using this application, but I'll keep you updated if I do. This will for sure become one of the must have applications installed on your N95 or any S60 3rd Edition phone.

Google is showing more and more love for S60. Finally. They've been catering to the iPhone for a while now. This new Google Search application brings you quick access to anything Google can find on the web.

The application comes with a desktop shortcut which places itself right above the left and right shortcuts, conveniently out of the way of your calendar entries and other shortcuts that you have displayed. The Google shortcut is only viewable when you first get to the standby screen from another application or when you press the pencil key. Thats right, if your phone (N82) doesn't have a pencil key, you can make the application a shortcut on your standby screen and it does the same thing. Of course the quick key (pencil shortcut) can be disabled if you'd like.

Google Search for S60 brings you results nearest to your location, if it's something physical your looking for like restaurants or movie times. I've been using Google's movie time service in my browser for a while now because the interface is so clean and convenient. They use Fandango's database so the movie times are always accurate. This new application makes movie times even faster. Just type movie times in the search box and your results show up within seconds, depending on your phones connection speed.

Google Search's implementation of the desktop shortcut makes me wonder why other developers haven't done something similar. I've always wanted a little icon of the weather displayed on the standby screen, or maybe some sports scores of my favorite team. Who knows?

This is an alternative to using emTube, unless of course you already have a N95 8gb with built in flash support.

If not, with Mobitubia, you get full accesss to the Youtube database on your s60 phone in good quality, full screen format. The load time is actually pretty quick as well. On an Edge connection here in the States, a 2 minute video loads in about 1.5 minutes, and you can start watching the video even before it fully loads. For you lucky European users, you'll have pretty much no wait time on a 3g connection. And if your in a WiFi area, this works great as well.
Best of all you can save your viewed clips to your memory card if you want to check em out later, without having to reload them.

Amazing enough, this application is free to use but donations are encouraging to keep up development of this great application. Also, make sure you have an unlimited data plan or use this on a WiFi connection, Mobitubia uses tons of data.



Mobitubia loads up with a decently clean interface. The icons are slightly choppy, but not annoying. You have so many of Youtube's normal features in this application.

If you go to the Youtube icon you get the following:

• Recently Featured
• Popular Clips
• Open Web Clip (if you know the URL)
• View by Youtube ID
• Clip Search

Other icons include Saved Clips, Open Clip URL, About, & Exit.


You have so many options while watching a video clip as well.

• Play/Pause
• Replay
• Status Bar (show, hide, autohide)
• Max Frame Skip (keep it at 0)
• Save Clip (when finished viewing, to your phone or card)
  
• Back and Exit

A few days ago I talked about the new full desktop - mobile browser coming to S60 called Skyfire. Well this puppy just got reviewed by Brighthand, and damn it looks good. Now mind you this was a review done on a Windows Mobile phone, but the developers are saying we'll get the same thing for S60.

I would probably never use this application, but Symbian Guru (not Ricky) has released a freeware java application for keeping track of your Google Finance Stock program. I'm sure a huge amount of S60 users will get some use out of this application, since most S60 devices are considered smartphones and business phones. Below are the features...

Thanks to Phoneboy, I just read some news over at Howard Forums about a new mobile browser for Symbian S60 devices that brings you a true desktop browser experience. Skyfire will use the same idea as Opera Mini, in which it a backend proxy server to process the website to work on your Nokia phone. It will feature full flash support for websites such as Youtube and Espn.com. The latest Nokia N95 8gb firmware update already gives browser flash support, but people still run into out of memory errors. Hopefully this new 3rd party browser can solve that problem. I think it's great that Nokia will have new competition with 3rd party web browsers, it will only push them to make the built-in one better. Best thing is this application will be FREE!

Even better is I'm hearing that this will work on older models such as the Nokia N73, but don't quote me on that. If that is the case, Skyfire can possibly become one of the most popular S60 applications.

The picture to the left is a screenshot of Skyfire Browser on a Nokia N95. I dropped a screenshot I found over the Nokia N95 8gb screen using Photoshop. I'm not sure that there is even an actual beta version being tested right now.
