Just letting everyone know that if you've been on the fence about the Nokia E71 - it's now cheaper than the N82. You can get the Nokia E71 NAM edition from Amazon.com for $345 - What a steal!

I know I just told you about the availability of the E71 White NAM version just a few weeks ago, but this deal is just too good not to share.

16gb MicroSD Card Now Under $100

I also wanted to inform everyone that the SanDisk 16GB microSDHC Card is now under $100. I haven't picked one up yet, but I really plan on it once it hits the $60 mark.

Stay tuned for the introduction of a new writer here at the blog, along with a new logo and a new review of the Nokia E66.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately I've been super busy!

It's been how long since the iPhone's release? It seems like years - I think it has been. Either way I'm pretty sick of seeing people try to draw comparisons of the iPhone and the new Nokia 5800. It's like comparing a pretty little poodle to a sophisticated labrador hunting dog. One is smart and the other isn't.

But what about the new Blackberry Storm vs. Nokia 5800. That seems like a better comparison to me. I find it interesting that Blackberry and Nokia released their touchscreen smartphones to the world and nearly the same time. You can already find a kazillion websites that go into great detail about each phone, so I'll just lay out the basic specs...

Blackberry Storm

According to this article by dialaphone about the Blackberry Storm, here's a list of the basics...

3.25″ Touchscreen (480 x 360)
Accelorometer
Visual Qwerty keyboard
3.2 Megapixel Camera
Integrated GPS with A-GPS functionality
1GB Onboard memory with MicroSD support
624 MHz Processor
3G
EDGE
Built in Handsfree
Bluetooth
3.5mm Stereo Headphone Jack
Mini-Usb connectivity

See more about the Blackberry Storm here.

Dayyummm, thats not to shabby.

And the Nokia 5800 specs...

3.2-inch touchscreen display with 16 Million colors
3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus
Quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM/EDGE radio
3G UMTS/HSDPA
Bluetooth 2.0
WiFi
GPS
3.5mm headphone jack
TV-out port
140MB on-board storage
111 x 52 x 14.5 mm
104g
8gb Memory Card

Looks like the camera specs will be nearly the same. I'm not sure if the 5800 will have a Carl Zeiss lens, if so that will help alot.

But it also depends on what's inside. Symbian S60 vs. RIM. Many love the Symbian S60 3rd Edition already, and will be dying to get their hands on the new Symbian S60 5th Edition which will be showcased on the 5800. With all the 3rd party applications already part of the Symbian S60 library, I'm sure Nokia fans will miss these. There's just so much you can do with a S60 device it's amazing. Uploading/Downloading to FTP accounts, viewing files on your computer while your away, the N-Gage platform, the list can go on and on. I haven't seen much on the new Blackberry touchscreen UI, but I'm sure the die hard Blackberry fans will love it. Of course your get the same great, reliable email service that Blackberry offers, hopefully Nokia can start working overtime on their new "Nokia Email Service" that's still in the beta testing phase.

People have always said that Nokia needs to close the gap between their smart "business" phones & smart "pleasure" phones, pretty much combine the Eseries and Nseries. Do you think Nokia has moved a step closer with the 5800? It's hard to say that the 5800 has moved closer to business, if anything it has stayed exactly where the rest of the Nseries is at. I think Blackberry is really trying to get to this convergence point with this upcoming phone.

What do you think? Is this a better comparison than all the Nokia vs. iPhone comparisons? Surely, die hard Nokia fans would rather own a Blackberry than an iPhone right?

Now that the N95 is already a few years old, I find myself asking the question - What phone is the new king of the Nseries? Or even - What phone SHOULD be the new king of the Nseries? Surely the N95 can still hold it's own as far as specs and functionality go. But Nokia fans are dying for something new and drastically improved. I say the N95 was the king of Nseries because of it's popularity - this phone was a HUGE player in the market, and still is. But the Nseries needs a new leader of the pack.

Photobucket

The initial thought is to crown the Nokia N96 as the king. After all, it has a huge storage capacity and beautiful screen right? Yeah, but what else does it bring to the table? Well, we have mobile TV thanks to DBV-H technology. I think this is a great idea, but whats stopping me (a N82 and E71 user) from just getting a Hava box or Sling Player. I can get any TV channels I have at home streamed to my S60 phone. And apparently DBV-H technology isn't doing so well in the markets it's already in, according to Mobile Burn. Maybe the N96 will be a jump start for the market? With it's extremely high price point I'm not so sure.

The fellas over at Phones 4 U also agree with my analysis of the N96. It's hard to tell if the market will catch on and come to love the N96 like they did the N95. The article states,

Ultimately though, this is about a next generation mobile phone being able to evolve on from a previous model, the Nokia N95, which went though 4 ‘design revamps’ before Nokia finally conceded defeat and accepted the new Nokia N96 was due. However, the issue has been raised that the new Nokia N96 is no more than the Nokia N95 with go faster stripes and a new slim line sports body kit, which is the view of mobile phone purists, but will the public be duped.

Harsh words? I don't think so. The article does go on to point out some of the huge advantages the N96 have over other phones in the market. It's definitely worth a full read.

Hey Mike, What About The Double-LED Flash?

I'm really not all that impressed. But again, this is coming from a Nokia N82 user, so what do you expect? I have yet to see a crisp clear picture of two people in a low-light environment living the night up. I've seen a few low-light closeups - but those pictures aren't a realistic situation. I don't think I've ever needed to take a closeup of my moms flower garden or my old GI Joe collection in the dark. What you need is a good camera that takes good pictures in dark conditions from around 5 feet away. Like I said, I'm not saying the N96 can't do it. I just haven't seen any good proof. With tons of Google Reader subscriptions to Nokia related blogs and websites, I've yet to see any N82 vs N96 low light battle galleries. I'm not expecting the N96 to be up to par with xenon flash, I'm just hoping it does somewhat well. I was pretty let down by the N95's flash - not only the amount of light but how long it takes to snap the photo in low light.

My friend Devin from The Nokia Guide just wrote an article about his search for a new phone after getting his previous two stolen. Given the current Nseries lineup with all the new phones, he still went with the N82. Here's what he had to say about the N96...

The N96 comes close to the N95 8GB I had, but adds an impressive 16GB of built-in memory and even a card slot for one of those capacious 16GB microSDHC cards, giving me a whopping 32 GB. Off course there’s also the DVB-H that I won’t be using for quite some time as you’d have to travel for thousands of miles to reach a country where it’s being used. The handset’s current price is well north of the $700 mark, making me rethink this decision. If it was going for around the $600+ range it would have stood a chance. The camera with its dual LED would be perfect for videos, but definitely worse than the N82, a device introduced back in 2007.

Another analysis I agree with. I'd also like to mention that the N96 lacks in the battery department. I'm seeing horror stories that it's similar battery life to the N95 Classic. Why Nokia, Why?

Regardless, the N96 is still a great phone. The huge 2.8" screen is gorgeous, an the 16gb internal memory plus a expandable microSD card slot is to die for. Music/Video lovers will never run out of room, leaving extra gigs for images and podcasts. Definitely a huge advantage right there. Not to mention the dedicated gaming/multimedia keys and the cool little kickstand (which should be on every Nseries phone). One looking to get the iPhone should definitely take a second look at the Nokia N96.

Since I can't say that the Nokia N96 is the new "Kings Of Nseries", then which phone do I think is. In my eyes it's still the N82. The thing is like a ninja. It's so stealthy - yet really packs a punch. When one first looks at it, the design doesn't say much. It's not flash or "cool", but when you start playing with the device you realize it can do everything any other Nseries can do, plus fire great pictures.

But shouldn't the title go to a phone with a larger screen and 3g that works all over the world (n82 NAM 3g does not exist)? Shouldn't it have superb battery life, and the latest Symbian S60 Feature Pack 2, and of course a killer 5 megapixel camera?

To me - right now the most impressive Nseries phone is the Nokia N85. Killer battery life, great screen, comes with 8gb memory card, NAM 3g coming in early 2009 (hopefully sooner), Feature Pack 2, great sound, what more can you ask for. Of course I'd rather have xenon over dual LED but that was left out. A closer look and my thoughts on the Nokia N85 will be a upcoming article.

What do you think? Any N96 owners like to chime in?

Who should get the "King Of Nseries" crown?

I just logged into my Share On Ovi account and noticed something new. Map View!

I can't tell you how happy I am that this feature has finally been implemented. It was one of the last remaining features that Flickr had over Ovi. It really is a great feature that works perfectly as far as I can tell. It's only right that Nokia finally gives us this new view since all the high end Nokia smartphones come with GPS and geotagging capabilities.

Find the Maps View button under your channel title.

Photobucket

Check out the screenshots below from my "Working On The Waterfront" channel. All the pictures I take when I'm working a shift at the Port Of LA/LB are uploaded there... See how it looks on the maps -

Initial Map View

Photobucket

As you can see, the images are numbered. Instead of layering multiple images on top of eachother and cluttering the map, Ovi simply numbers how many are in that layer. The more you zoom in the more the images separate and the layers are re-numbered. I think it works perfectly.

Map View When Clicking A Layer Image

Photobucket

When you click the image, now you can see it bigger and scroll through all the other images taken in that place. Once again, great implementation.

Another cool thing is when you click "Share" when in the maps view, it will let you email the maps view page to your friends/family. Personally I think this is huge for sharing vacations, hiking trails, boat rides, tours, whatever.

I haven't seen any official documentation on this yet. I think the Ovi team might have added this functionality during yesterday's update. I'm sure we'll hear something "official" soon.

Are you as happy as I am with these new findings?

Nokia Email Beta v.3 Released - Multiple Accounts Now Possible

Posted by Mike Macias | Thursday, October 09, 2008 | , , | 4 comments »

The new Nokia Email Service has recently been updated to beta version 3. Thanks to this article by Gwapz of Mobile World Innovation, I first learned that this update would be coming yesterday. I first wrote about the roadmap for this new application and service being pushed by Nokia a few weeks ago, so you can go back and look at that article to see how their coming along.

Edit: Screenshots might not be loading. Please be patient.
Photobucket

I just downloaded this new version, and there are a few improvements that many have been hoping for, and a few features that are still missing...

Improvements I've Noticed

- Multiple Email Accounts are now possible. I haven't tried to add another email account yet since all my email addresses go to Gmail account, but the functionality is surely there. You can add another email address from the application or from the Nokia Email website.

- Better Email Synchronization has been implemented. I noticed this right off the bat. Comparing my Gmail inbox on the computer against my N82 is within about 15 seconds. Before it would take much longer.

- More Device Support including the Nokia N82, which oddly wasn't included before this release. The N78 is also supported.

What's STILL Missing In Nokia Email?

- Folder Synchronization still isn't here. I was hoping to have this so I can take advantage of my Gmail labels, like in the default email client. I don't even see Local folders on this new version, which is kind of a bummer.

- Corporate Email Support isn't yet ready, but it's coming soon. Check out the screenshot that I got after I tried to connect a Exchange account. Obviously this is good news.

corpemail - Share on Ovi

- Calendar Synchronization is something that I'm hoping they add. I would love to have my Gmail calendar synchronize on the fly, or even synchronization with the new Ovi Calendar service, as Ricky mentioned in the comments.

- Peak Hours should be added, similar to the Mail For Exchange application. When I'm sitting at my computer during my day job, I don't need my phone to be checking email constantly. When I'm out to lunch, after work, weekends, is when I would like my email "always on". If we can schedule this, that would be great.

What else do you think should be added?

Make sure you head over to Beta Labs and leave your feedback.

I wrote this article yesterday at E71Fanatics.com, and I thought I'd share this deal with all my Symbian Addict readers.

Hi everone. I've rarely posted about the E71 white edition here at the blog, I'm not even sure how long the white E71 NAM version has been available. But I was searching on Amazon.com today and noticed their selling it for $421 dollars. Not a bad deal considering it comes with the 1 year warranty and the security of hassle free returns from Amazon.

Click here to see this deal.

Don't forget to upgrade your E71 memory to 8gb. Right now you can get the SanDisk 8gb microSD & card reader for about $38. I highly recommend getting the card reader - the file transfers are like 10 times faster than just using the usb cord with the E71.

Do any of you already have the E71 white version? How do you like it so far?

Nokia 5800 Xpress Music - Share on Ovi

There is so much hype going around the internet right now about all the specs of the new Nokia 5800 it's insanity! Darla is already fuming about the new blogs. I've seen lots of press releases (which I will also post later), but not many detailed opinions besides what you'd find at Howard Forums.

I'm not so worried about what the 5800 can do against a 3rd edition phone, I'm curious to see the LOOK, STYLE, & Ease Of Use of the new Nokia 5800 Touch User Interface, which is powered by Symbian S60 5th Edition.

As you already know our favorite N95,N82, N81, E71, N96, etc etc is powered by S60 3rd Edition. One of the main complaints of the Symbian Platform is how boring it looks. It's known that it's one of the most customizable and "open" platforms as far as functionality goes, but as for looks and ease of use - many have complained. It's been said that the UI is too complicated for newbies and the menu system isn't very efficient. To find simple tasks you often have to dig around.

I've asked myself this question...

Does Symbian S60 5th Edition change that? Does it break the boundaries and bring us more "ease of use" and "eye candy" that so many have wanted after seeing the iPhone?

To answer this question I'll show you some of the new media that Nokia has put out to show off the new Nokia 5800. Some of these videos won't be viewable in your RSS reader, so log on to the full site if you want to see them.

A Look At The Homescreen

We now have 3 things we can do with the homescreen - Basic, Shortcuts Bar, Contacts Bar (new).

The Shortcuts Bar looks like a let down. It seems that you only have 4 application shortcuts and tons of wasted space. I would have like to see more customization. It doesn't look like you can have messages, email, and missed calls listed on this homescreen, which is a real bummer.

The Contacts Bar seems useful and I like how it displays missed calls, messages, and something new - RSS feeds. The RSS feeds are something that not all would find useful, but I can see myself enjoying it. Check out the video below to see a little more how the Contacts Bar works...

What do you think? Would you find the Contacts Bar useful?

If you noticed in the first video it seems that once again you have to dig deep to find these settings. It takes 6 key presses from the homescreen to find your homescreen settings. You'll also notice the S60 menu looks very similar to 3rd Edition.

In the first video they also covered a few other things like the Web Browser, Maps, & Media. Nothing really revolutionary, although I think all three of those aspects of the phone will be great with the new touchscreen.

New Small - But Useful Functions

Here are some new functions of the 5th Edition touch UI that really caters to one of my original questions about ease of use.

Check out this video...

Media Bar: I'm really digging this feature. This helps solve the problem of the lack of active standby shortcut applications. Having those common shortcuts from any screen will be a huge plus.

Touch The Clock: Here you can access your Alarm application. Touch the date next to the clock - This will open your Profile options and well as the shortcut to Calendar.

Touch Above The Date In The Status Area: This brings up your Connectivity options like Bluetooth and WLAN networks. Very handy indeed.

Dial-A-Button & Contacts: I'm not so sure these buttons needed to be so darn big. With all the capabilities of S60 powered smartphones, I find myself using Contacts & dialing less than I use all the other functions.

To Answer My Original Question - Yes there are SOME things that make 5th edition more user friendly, but not much. I think I'd really have to get a hands on with the 5800 to really judge if Nokia is heading down the right path.

That's all I have for now since I have lots of other work to get done.

Do you think 5th Edition will be a big upgrade to S60 3rd Edition? Or does it seem like the same old stuff, just not with touch?
