Well I got sick of lookin at the old layout and realized that I hate looking at websites with the content on the right, so I have this one now that has the content on the left and sidebar on the right. I know it's simple, but once I get the header logo designed, It'll look much better. Sorry for the lack of articles lately, works been busy. I'll have more up soon.

Anyways, here are a few themes that caught my eye when I was browsing the Mobile-Review Forums. The first one which I really enjoy because of the bright vibrant colors is called Red Harmony. Sorry for the crappy screenshots, something wasn't right when I took them. I assure you these themes are not blurry.

The next N82 theme is called Aqua Bubbles. It's just what it sounds like, with a little patch of grass on the bottom.

You can find these themes over at Roman Keller Design. The Red Harmony says it's for the Nokia E90, but as you see in my screenshots it works great for the Nokia N82, N95, and all S60 phones as well. Make sure you unzip the files first.

If you have any cool themes to share, leave your comment below with the link to the theme. Thanks!

This is a huge tip I posted over at The N82 Blog yesterday, and I've been meaning to share it here. I recently discovered today how frickin easy it is to make your phone automatically input the extension or pin number of your contacts. For instance, every time I call my girlfriends work I have to dial 324 once the call connects to get to her extension. It can get annoying, especially if you call these contacts all the time. Some people like having a pin number for their voicemail. With this feature, you can have the phone automatically input the pin number so you don't have to.

Here are the instructions for adding extensions or pins to your contacts:

1. Type the phone number into your S60 device, then insert a 'p' by pressing the '*' key three times. P stands for pause, it will pause the dialing for one second. Need it to pause for three seconds? Simply insert three p's.

2. Next you'll insert the extension or pin ID followed by a hash mark, then insert another 'p'.

3. (if more than one extension) Finally you'll insert the PIN number followed by the hash mark and push SEND.

4. The number you dialed will look like this: +3585012345678p12345#p6789# - It dials the number, pauses for one seconds, inserts the conference ID, pauses again, then inserts the PIN code.

This can even go for numbers of companies you call all the time, like your bank. Multiple extensions are supported! You know, press 1 for English, 1 for account balance, 2 for savings, bla bla bla. Jot it down, and input the digits as pictured above.

Hope you guys & gals find this handy.

Nokia N78 Demonstrations Video - Basic Functions

Not really much here, mostly everything we've already seen on our S60 handsets. The video basically demonstrates all the basic functions of the Nokia N78. You'll some slightly different stuff because of Feature Pack 2, but don't hope for any transition effects or anything like that.

First Real World Pictures Of The Nokia N82 Black

I just posted over at The N82 Blog the first real world pictures of the N82 in sexy black. These pictures are pretty weak on the quality, so don't get too let down yet. The gloss looks like a little much for me.

Here's one of the pictures posted at The N82 Blog, head over to see the other.

How To Set Up Python On Your S60

Posted by Mike | Tuesday, February 26, 2008 | , , | 0 comments »

With more and more developers using Python to design their applications, it's becoming more and more important to have Python installed on your S60. Applications such as ShakeLock, which I mentioned a few weeks ago, need to have Python installed on your phone in order to work.

As of right now, the latest version of Python for S60 is 1.4.2.

You can click here for the direct link to install Python on your Symbian smartphone. Once installed, you don't have to do anything else.

If you'd like to see where the file comes from, click here. When you get to the download page look for this - PythonForS60_1_4_2_3rdEd.SIS

Want to know a little more about Python?
Python for S60 brings the power and productivity of the Python programming language to the S60 platform. The tools enable rapid application development and prototyping, and the ability to create stand-alone S60 applications written in Python. Click here for the Python For S60 page.

Today I got the honor of testing out a new application coming to S60 handsets called Smart Settings by MobiFun Software. This application was actually a big hit for s40 users, but is just barely making it's way to S60. This application is still in beta and should be released in March.

02.21.2008 - Share on Ovi

What does Smart Settings for S60 do? Basically it provides three major functions.

1. Auto Lock options. You can tell the phone to auto lock only in certain profiles. Set the auto lock period, set the phone to lock on any screen or just the standby screen, and set the auto lock exceptions for certain applications.

02.21.2008 - Share on Ovi

For example, I have a profile called Car. I keep my phone on a mount that sites in the middle console, facing me. Volume is all the way up, and the lock is set to off. This way I can easily access the functions of my phone like calling, maps, or reading a text (when I'm sitting at a read light of course). I also usually set my auto lock application exceptions only for the Music Player. Handy for when the phone is sitting at my desk when I'm at work and jamming the tunes. No need to fiddle with a lock when it's just chilling there on the desk.

2. Easy Unlock. Here you can change your lock combo buttons. Instead of the standard lock combos, you can change it to whatever is more comfortable for you. You can change the locks and unlocks to separate combos which is pretty cool.

02.21.2008 - Share on Ovi02.21.2008 - Share on Ovi

3. Start Menu. You can make your left or right softkeys into a start menu, sorta like the start menu in windows. Push the softkey you choose for this application, and a small window pops up with up to ten shortcuts that you select to any applications installed on the phone. Each application is numbered, so if you have "settings" as your fourth shortcut, then you just have to push five on your keypad instead of scrolling all the way down to it. This I guess would be handy only for candybars since you don't have a slider to worry about. You can easily change the order of your applications as well.

02.21.2008 - Share on Ovi02.21.2008 - Share on Ovi

I'm happy to report that I haven't found any bugs while using this application, but I'll keep you updated if I do. This will for sure become one of the must have applications installed on your N95 or any S60 3rd Edition phone.

How many of you are looking forward to this?

Google is showing more and more love for S60. Finally. They've been catering to the iPhone for a while now. This new Google Search application brings you quick access to anything Google can find on the web.

The application comes with a desktop shortcut which places itself right above the left and right shortcuts, conveniently out of the way of your calendar entries and other shortcuts that you have displayed. The Google shortcut is only viewable when you first get to the standby screen from another application or when you press the pencil key. Thats right, if your phone (N82) doesn't have a pencil key, you can make the application a shortcut on your standby screen and it does the same thing. Of course the quick key (pencil shortcut) can be disabled if you'd like.

Google Search for S60 brings you results nearest to your location, if it's something physical your looking for like restaurants or movie times. I've been using Google's movie time service in my browser for a while now because the interface is so clean and convenient. They use Fandango's database so the movie times are always accurate. This new application makes movie times even faster. Just type movie times in the search box and your results show up within seconds, depending on your phones connection speed.

Search Results in your browser...

Google Search's implementation of the desktop shortcut makes me wonder why other developers haven't done something similar. I've always wanted a little icon of the weather displayed on the standby screen, or maybe some sports scores of my favorite team. Who knows?

Download this Google Search for S60 application by pointing your phones browser to the http://www.google.com/mobile/ and click "Search" download.

Nokia Gets Comical - Inside The Nokia N78

Posted by Mike | Wednesday, February 20, 2008 | , | 2 comments »

I found this video over at AllAboutSymbian.com. I actually like this commercial and hope that Nokia airs it. The fellas at the Nokia marketing department are starting to show somewhat of a funny side.

Check out the insides of the Nokia N78....

I'm actually really fond of this phone. The only thing that is turning me off is the lack of 5mp and Xenon flash. I may consider getting this since it's been announced to have US 3g. It all depends on if Nokia has fixed the camera speed and stability compared to the N73. I'm assuming they have since it has so much RAM. We'll wait for sample photos to roll in.

The Nokia N96 - All You Can Eat

Since there is so much info going around on the Nokia N96, instead of posting a bunch of random posts here, I'm going to link you directly to a handful of blogs and websites that have the inside scoop on the N96. I personally couldn't make it to Mobile World Congress, so I don't have any first hand information. These websites I'm going to list got the first peek of the N96.

Check out the links below to go directly to their N96 pages.

Symbian World

The Symbian Blog

Nokia Creative

The Nokia Blog

The Nokia Guide

NokNok.tv

I'll post more sources as they stream in.

We're finally getting a real first hand look at Feature Pack 2. The video below only shows the cool transitions, which alone make me want one of these new phones. The response time of the menus is great, and everything is smooth and fluid.

Check out the video. We should be getting more videos like this in a few weeks.

Feature Pack 2 will make it's debut on the Nokia N96 and N78. I must say I'm pretty impressed. What do you think?

Source: IntoMobile

I'm sure you've all heard about the new Nokia flagship phone, the N96. If you haven't, read a few posts down and you'll find the specs. The specs are amazing. A true multimedia phone. Huge screen, video playback, built-in stereo speakers, tons of memory. They are begging you to use the crap out of it, and not to talk. Use it as a computer. That's right - emails, web, movies, music, games, tv, maps, video recording with double lcd - the works. Heck, if it had a full qwerty keyboard I wouldn't need a laptop anymore.

But once again, why the small 950mah battery? Didn't they learn the first time with the Nokia N95. Mark Guim from The Nokia Blog got a video with an interview with one of the N96 managers. He tries to explain why they don't need a bigger battery. He basically says the firmware has been optimized to not take a huge toll on the battery. I don't believe it. On a phone like this, my average day would be...

  • 3-4 hours of music over bluetooth at work
  • IMAP email set to check for new mail every 30 minutes
  • about an hour throughout the day of web, rss feeds.
  • 5-10 photos, with uploading to Ovi (I'll talk about the new Ovi online service later, it's awesome!)
  • about 45 mins of Google Maps and traffic indicator to navigate my way 30 miles to and from work in the lovely Los Angeles traffic
  • 15-20 text messages
  • 5 multimedia messages recieved or sent (funny pictures, etc.)
  • 20-30 minutes of phone calls
  • about 15 minutes of video playback (youtube and south park episodes.)
Thats AVERAGE! I'm sure I'm not off from many Nseries users. This is how the phone is meant to be used. I expect that usage to get me from 6am-11pm with a few bars left. Of course I may be asking for a lot, but maybe not. A 1400mah battery should handle that.

But will it? Thats the big question that we won't know until the first reviews of the N96 start rolling in.

For now, check out this video by of a Nokia manager talking about the N96 battery life. (thanks to The Nokia Blog).

What do you think? Do you buy it? Will you take the plunge and be one of the first to get this phone before they release another version with a larger battery 5 months later?

I'm working the 3am shift this morning on the docks. Thought i'd make a quick post from my phone while on break. Wonder which one of there thousands of shipping containers has a shipment of n82s and n95s. Hopefully I can get some good shots of the sunrise this morning.

Have a good day all. I should be making a few posts when i'm off work later today.

Guide To Signing Your Unsigned Applications

Posted by Mike | Monday, February 18, 2008 | | 0 comments »

Sometimes you come across new applications that may not be signed by Symbian just quite yet. Signed applications is a method that Symbian uses to ensure that applications are not viruses or too buggy. But sometimes we just want to trust the developers and install the application. There are a few methods for signing applications for your Nokia. This one is by far the easiest, thanks to P@sco from Howard Forums.

Since their is so much to the tutorial to get started, I'm just going link to the straight to the post instead of pasting it here. It comes with step by step instructions and screenshots to go along with it. SymbianSigned.com is currently down right now (2-17-08), but it is supposed to go back up tomorrow. That's the site you need to get your certificate from before you start the signing process.

Click here to read the guide on how to sign your unsigned application for the Nokia N82 and other S60 phones.

Deal Alert! 4gb MicroSD For $22.95 From Buy.com

Posted by Mike | Monday, February 18, 2008 | , | 0 comments »

This is just a quick post to let all the readers know about this great deal on a 4gb MicroSD card from Buy.com with Free Shipping. The brand is Kingston, and I can say I've been using there 1 and 2gb cards for years without any problems at all. Honestly for $22.95, this is too good of a deal to pass up. And if you've never used Google's version of PayPal called "Checkout", then you get another ten bucks off! WOW. Just got one with a new Checkout account for $14.95 including shipping.

You better jump on this quick, Buy.com usually has these huge sales only for one day, since they sell out so fast. It's currently their number one selling item for the day. (2.18.08)

This is an alternative to using emTube, unless of course you already have a N95 8gb with built in flash support.

If not, with Mobitubia, you get full accesss to the Youtube database on your s60 phone in good quality, full screen format. The load time is actually pretty quick as well. On an Edge connection here in the States, a 2 minute video loads in about 1.5 minutes, and you can start watching the video even before it fully loads. For you lucky European users, you'll have pretty much no wait time on a 3g connection. And if your in a WiFi area, this works great as well.
Best of all you can save your viewed clips to your memory card if you want to check em out later, without having to reload them.

Amazing enough, this application is free to use but donations are encouraging to keep up development of this great application. Also, make sure you have an unlimited data plan or use this on a WiFi connection, Mobitubia uses tons of data.

Mobitubia loads up with a decently clean interface. The icons are slightly choppy, but not annoying. You have so many of Youtube's normal features in this application.

If you go to the Youtube icon you get the following:

  • Recently Featured
  • Popular Clips
  • Open Web Clip (if you know the URL)
  • View by Youtube ID
  • Clip Search
Other icons include Saved Clips, Open Clip URL, About, & Exit.

You have so many options while watching a video clip as well.
  • Play/Pause
  • Replay
  • Status Bar (show, hide, autohide)
  • Max Frame Skip (keep it at 0)
  • Save Clip (when finished viewing, to your phone or card)
  • Back and Exit
Overall Mobitubia runs clean and smooth. Watch a video demo below:

To never get bored ever again, click here to download Mobitubia and watch YouTube on your Nokia handset. Be sure to come back and give us your thoughts, and if you use emTube, try this out and see which one you like better.

02.12.2008 - Share on Ovi

I just came across this beautiful picture I took while on the way to work at the docks. The N73 comes through again.

Mark Guim from The Nokia Blog uploaded a video to Youtube showing off the double led flash of the new Nokia N96. I'm pretty impressed with the brightness for video use, but it doesn't come close to the xenon flash for taking pictures on the Nokia N82. I honestly think all 5mp Nseries devices should come with xenon flash. The LED, even double LED, will prove to once again be useless for night shots, as on the N95. People buy these beauties for the cameras, if not just get yourself a nice looking Eseries.

Anyways, here is a video sample of the double LED flash of the Nokia N96, thanks to The Nokia Blog. I can't wait to see some night photo samples.

Industry leaders collaborate to provide mobile users fast and easy access to relevant information
Mobile World Congress 2008, Barcelona, Spain/Espoo, Finland -

Nokia and Google today announced that Google's popular search engine will be integrated with the Nokia Search application. The integration will begin in select markets with the Nokia N96, Nokia N78, Nokia 6210 Navigator and Nokia 6220 classic. Google search will be extended to additional Nokia handset models in the future. Ultimately, Nokia will make Google search available to its customers in over 100 countries around the world, serving mobile owners speaking more than 40 languages.

Nokia Search, now with Google, offers fast and easy access to web information from the handset. In addition, Nokia Search also makes it possible for users to search content on their device and use local search engines for a complete search experience. Nokia Search is available on many devices and provides direct access with one click from the active standby screen, saving users time and steps in their searching. Once users have found the information they are seeking, Nokia Search enables users to act on that information by engaging device assets such as maps, messaging or the browser with just one click.

"Providing choices for our consumers is an important driver in Nokia's Internet service strategy," said Ilkka Raiskinen, vice-president, software and services at Nokia. "This integration allows our consumers the ability to use the innovative search technologies, which have made Google almost synonymous with Internet search.

"Adding Google to Nokia Search provides mobile users with fast, relevant and comprehensive search experience that will be familiar to the people who use Google to search the web from their desktop," said Google's VP of Engineering and Products for Mobile Vic Gundotra. "Google search combined with the high quality applications on Nokia devices help make information available to Nokia device users wherever they are and provide an excellent overall experience."

The collaboration announced today builds on previous cooperation between Nokia and Google. Google search has previously been available on Nokia Internet tablets, and last year the Nokia N95 8GB became the first mobile device to fully support YouTube, the video-sharing platform owned by Google.

Well V-Day is just two days away, and what better way can you express your enthusiasm for the romantic holiday than setting your Nokia S60 phone theme to a passionate Valentines Day theme. The guys of Chaos Inc and NokiaSymbianThemes.com have came up with something creative. If your interested, click here to check out the website, or click here to download the file directly.

Warning: Sometimes that site is down for a short period during the day.

Well it seems as though the Nokia 96 will be the next king of the Nseries. It's a multimedia powerhouse, you can even watch live TV! I'm sure this probably will only work in Europe, but who knows. 16 gigs internally, and an expandable microSD slot puts the new 16gig iPhone to shame. This thing can have more storage space than my laptop has! The fellas over at NokNok.tv got the first hands on video, which you can view below. Be sure to check out their website and give em props for getting this footage.

and another video I found while browsing Youtube...

Personally I think this phone is a huge upgrade over the N95, mainly because of the slick design looks. But this baby also has a scroll wheel and feature pack 2 and the music quality is "supposedly" going to be the best out of any Nokia devices. The main thing being criticized right now is the battery. I also am bummed that it doesn't have a xenon flash, but maybe the double led will suffice. All we can do is hope and pray that the slider is more solid than the N95.

And of course the specs of the Nokia N96...

  • Symbian S60v3 Feature Pack 2
  • Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz) and dual-band HSDPA (900/2100MHz)
  • 103mm x 55mm x 18mm (4″ x 2.2″ x .7″) compared to the N95’s 99mm x 53mm x 19mm
    (4.0″ x 2.0″ x 0.7″)
  • 125g
  • 2.8″ QVGA display with 16m colors
  • 950mAh battery
  • WiFi with uPnP
  • DVB-H (digital TV)
  • 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, Carl Zeiss optics, dual-LED flash for photos and video light, secondary front-facing VGA cam for video calling
  • VGA quality video recording at 30 fps
  • Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR and A2DP
  • 3.5mm AV outlet for audio and TV-Out

  • Hidden kickstand for watching video
  • Dual-slide with dedicated multimedia keys and gaming keys.
  • Available Q3 2008, Priced at EUR 550 (US$800)

I just wanted to let you know about a new blog I started for Nokia N82 users. Everything there will be dedicated to the N82. You'll seem some articles that are post here added over there, and vice versus, of course because the two sites are so related. I'm still going to be 100% dedicated to this blog as well, so don't worry.

Head over to The N82 Blog to check it out and subscribe to the RSS feed.

A few days ago I talked about the new full desktop - mobile browser coming to S60 called Skyfire. Well this puppy just got reviewed by Brighthand, and damn it looks good. Now mind you this was a review done on a Windows Mobile phone, but the developers are saying we'll get the same thing for S60.

Check out this new demo video below:

I just got some crappy, really crappy news. It seems as though the Nokia N82 black version will be pushed back to April, instead of a release of next week as speculated earlier. Wonder why though. I posted the details at The N82 Blog, which is another blog I started that will be specifically for the N82. But I'll get into that later. For now check it out if your a fan of the Nokia N82.

Thanks to a tip from one of Symbian Addict's readers "Kostya", the first real Nokia N82 Black photo has been spotted, and it's on an official Nokia product page. You can find it at this link about half way down the page, for a decent price point of $629. I figure after a few months you should be able to pick one up for about $550. If you follow this blog, you already know how excited I am about this release. This is a quick post so this is all I got for now. I'll be posting screenshots of the website just in case Nokia decides to take them down.

Update: Ricky from Symbian-Guru posted a link to make this work with any newer Nseries device, not just the N81. I suppose N-Gage should work for the N73, N81, N82, & N95. Click here to check it out.

I just got word that N-Gage has gone live, at least for the Nokia N81. I can't go into details right now since I'm at work, but check out this link. Tons of screenshots and details at AllAboutSymbian.com. I'll be posting more on this later.

Here's what N-Gage has to say:

N81 owners, take part in creating the new wave of mobile play!

N-Gage First Access has begun. To ensure N-Gage is the best it can be, we want you to take an active part in its development.

N-Gage First Access allows Nokia N81 owners to download the pre-release version of the N-Gage application, try and buy N-Gage games, and provide feedback on the experience. It's a great opportunity to be the first to join the new wave of mobile play.

With Mobile World Congress coming in a few weeks, people are dying to hear what Nokia has up their sleeve for 2008. I can tell you this much. I know a black Nokia N82 is coming, and it's going to be a HUGE hit amongst Nokia fans, similar to how the Nokia N73 was. Of course the N95 has sold millions of phones, but I'm predicting that the black N82 will surpass that.

We have already seen preorders for the black N82 on various websites put up, and now recently taken down. Word on the street is they were asked to by Nokia so that Nokia can be the first to announce it. If you check out the 5 recent pages of this post at Howard Forums, you can tell people are already getting itchy and ancy to see this thing official.

Looking at the visitor stats for this blog in January, about 800 google searches for "n82 black" reached Symbian Addict. The 2nd most googled visits was "Nokia N95" with about 200. Now of course it's because the N82 black will be a new product, but the N95 8gb and the North American version are fairly new as well. And the N82 black is necessarily a new product, just a new color.

As you may know I've been covering all the latest news and rumblings of the Nokia N82 black. Click here to check out my posts about it with sample pictures to go along.

With the Mobile World Congress getting closer (February 11th-15th), I think we'll be hearing a lot more rumors about this highly anticipated Nokia device. Keep checking back for up to the minute news about the Nokia N82 black. I'm hoping to get some of the first real photos of this puppy, but I can't make any promises.

THANKS TO THE SYMBIAN ADDICT COMMENTER, IT'S FINALLY HERE!

If you didn't hear, the Mobile World Congress will take place on February 11th-14th in Barcelona. This is a huge event where lots of companies announce new phones and technologies. Lots of people are speculating that Nokia will be making some huge announcements about new products they will be releasing this year. I'm hoping they introduce a touchscreen device, along with a Nokia N82 with US 3g. I know alot of Nokia fans are also anticipating a Nseries device with a full Qwerty keypad, and a few new Eseries devices as well.

We already know they will be introducing a Nokia N95 8GB North American version, which will include US 3g bands. Mark Guim from The Nokia Blog posted about the recent FCC approval for this phone, as shown in the pictures below.

But there is even more to be hopeful and excited about at the Symbian S60 booth. Yesterday Symbian updated their official S60 blog, giving us some insight into what we should expect from them at the Mobile World Congress.

  • Here are the topics they will be covering.
  • New Innovations in S60 UI (including touch user interface)
  • Advanced sensors and sensor framework
  • Bring your Internet innovation to S60
  • Powerful technology to create innovative experiences
  • S60 and Internet Community Services
  • S60 Device Showcase
  • Tune my S60

This makes me wonder if I should hold off buying a Nokia N82 in a few months. We've already seen previews of S60's new Touch UI, but I'm sure they will be showing it off even more. I've already stated here that I would love to have a touch device with a normal keypad. I don't even mind if it's a T9 keypad. Touchscreen with N82 specs is exactly what I'm hoping for. I probably won't ever spend $500 bucks on a phone unless it has Xenon flash and 5 megapixels.

Click here to check out the full blog post here to get details on all those bullets I mentioned about the Symbian S60 booth at Mobile World Congress.

Oh and one more thing. Will they introduce N-Gage? Wasn't it due in December, then January? We'll see.
